Ferme et Forêt

Shiitake inoculation workshop

Learn how to inoculate logs and grow tasty and highly nutritious shiitake mushrooms in your own backyard. This is a one day workshop, offered two days in a row, on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27. You can sign up for one of either days. The cost is $70 and includes a hot lunch featuring cream of wild mushroom soup and fresh bread, and you get to take one freshly inoculated log home with you. Each workshop will run from 10am to approximately 3pm.

What to expect: We’ll start the day by visiting our mushroom yard in the forest and learning how we cultivate shiitake mushrooms at Ferme et Forêt. The rest of the day will be spent inoculating the logs. The tasks are drilling holes in the logs with a high-speed angle grinder fitted with a special drill bit, stuffing inoculant into the holes, capping the holes with hot wax, and moving the finished logs to the resting area. We’ll rotate tasks so we all get to try everything. We’ll take an hour break for lunch, when we can go inside to warm up and eat and get hot drinks. This workshop could be good for older kids, but is not recommended for younger ones.

Expect to get about 3/4 of a pound of mushrooms per year from the log you take home, for three or four years. That’s up to three pounds of mushrooms – or $45 worth!

To sign up, simply send me your name and an interact e-transfer for the $70 registration fee to lefarmteam@fermeetforet.ca. Make sure to indicate which day you would like to come. Each workshop will be capped at six participants, so sign up soon to avoid disappointment. This sold out fast last year! I’ll send you a confirmation email and information about what to bring when I receive your fee.
